They are scattered across the globe and team members work in different time zones. The efficiency of modern teams cannot be just measured by adding the individual capabilities; they must collaborate in such a way that their individual contributions complement each other harmoniously.

Slack vs Microsoft Teams
Slack stands for “Searchable Log of All Conversation and Knowledge." Launched in 2013, Slack provides collaboration and online services exclusively through cloud. It has grown exponentially and in just one year, Slack had acquired 500,000 active users and it was adding over 1 million in annual recurring revenue every 11 days. Presently it boasts of 10 million users who use Slack daily, split across more than 600,000 organizations. In its latest financial report, Slack reported a revenue of 400.6 million USD, growing from 105.2 million USD it hit over the past three fiscal years.
Microsoft teams was launched in 2017 and is positioned by Microsoft as the central hub of communications and collaboration within Office 365 suite. According to a recent survey conducted by Spiceworks, Microsoft Teams is the second most popular chat app and is now ahead of Slack in terms of market share. The most popular tool is Skype for Business, another Microsoft product. In the previous Ignite conference , Microsoft reported Teams grew over 165% in the past 1 year and at present, over 329,000 organizations are leveraging the application. Spiceworks also reported that Teams is set for fastest growth among all collaboration apps over the next two years.
The speedy rise for Microsoft Teams can be attributed to Microsoft’s strategy of bundling Teams with the Office 365 suite. It taps directly to the 155 million businesses worldwide who use the office productivity suite. Microsoft is also positioning Teams to replace Skype for Business in the long term.

January 29, 20191) Layout and design
Both Slack and Microsoft teams have similar layout. On the left side, you have a panel for contacts and tools and the bigger panel house conversations.
However Microsoft Team has more functionality in its search box and has an extra vertical panel on far left which has tabs like Activity, Chat, Meetings, Files and Teams.
2) Messaging
Slack and Microsoft offers wide range of messaging features and support file sharing. However Microsoft Team has advanced formatting options within the messaging box. For e.g. we can include emoji as well as GIF and also create a bulleted list in the message box.
3) File sharing and collaboration
Slack allows a maximum of 1 GB upload whereas in Microsoft teams, users can upload up to 15 GB. In addition, users can watch the content without downloading in Microsoft Teams. This feature is not supported in Slack.
4) Video calls
This feature is offered by both Slack and Microsoft Teams. In Microsoft teams, we can add up to 80 people in a video conference call. In slack the number is 15 and for Slack's free version, only two people can engage in a video conference.
5) Integration
The biggest USP for Microsoft teams is its integration with Office 365 suite and over 180+ integrations. However Microsoft teams still has lot of catching up to do as Slack offers over 800+ integration including ones with Microsoft rivals like Salesforce.
Summing up
Slack is designed for medium and small companies and it serves the purpose efficiently. Microsoft teams, on the other hand works great for large enterprises. Microsoft is pushing Teams to its enterprise clientele who are already on Office 365 suite. The long term goal, as stated by Microsoft is to replace Skype for Business with Teams. In terms of features, both are very competitive even though Teams scores in features whereas Slack scores in integration. With right strategy and deployment, collaboration software can bring in a communication overhaul and organizations should evaluate the application features with their business setup.
